Trauma & Substance Abuse Expert to Provide Free Continuing Education Training

MAYS LANDING, NJ – In 2017, 1 in 13 people in the United States needed Substance Use Disorder treatment, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. For adults aged 18-25, the number of people needing treatment for their Substance Use disorder was 1 in 7.

In New Jersey, 8 people die each day of drug overdoses, according to the State’s Attorney General.

RCA’s Trauma and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) experts believe that the vast majority of people with SUD have also experienced some type of trauma in their lives. “Trauma in its many forms causes changes in brain chemistry which can make people more vulnerable to addiction. This change in physiology affects the functioning of the brain and special care with specific components is required to help these patients.”

Our clinical experts will provide training at Recovery Centers of America at Lighthouse, 5034 Atlantic Avenue, Mays Landing, NJ 08330 from 9 AM to 12 PM on January 8, 2019. Tours of the facility are available to then public and CE attendees upon request prior to, during (if not attending CE) and after the three credit CE class. Areas covered:

• To be able to define traumatic stress and SUD
• To provide information on the effects of substance use and trauma on the functioning of the brain
• To understand the different types of trauma and the components of trauma-informed care
• To develop a basic understanding of effective treatments for people with traumatic exposure and substance use
